An election is supposed to be a celebration of the Plaid Snoopy and Friends joy hope love peace Christmas shirt of American democracy. Now, I feel we’re stuck witnessing Republican attempts to subvert that - and if they’re successful, kiss goodbye to even that small semblance of democracy. The US will have become a subverted authoritarian state behind their Great Leader, no better now than China, Russia or North Korea in this regard. People who think marriage is about love in between two people don’t understand what marriage is and what it does. Two consenting adults who just want to be together don’t need to get married to do it. In most modern societies, two people can love each other, move in together, and share their lives without getting married. Marriage is not at all about what happens between two people who love and trust each other. One big change that marriage accomplishes is make the couple’s relationship everybody else’s business. Before marriage, if someone dies without a will, their assets go to their relatives. After marriage, those assets go to the spouse instead. Marriage disinherits the relatives in favor of the spouse. Marriage gives both families a stake in the couple’s lives. When the married couple has children quickly, it’s not a big deal because both families are fine with the couple’s children inheriting the assets. However, if the couple dies without children and without proper estate planning, then which family would inherit the couple’s shared assets could become complicated. A couple getting married and then both dying after signing the certificate could force both families to deal with each other very quickly.
