He looked sad, tired, and beat. His motions were monotonous and continuous, but he kept going, committed to making a living, barely scraping by. Maybe he had a family at home, counting on him. It was to him that we gave the fifty dollar tip, carefully placing it into the palm of his hand, closing his fingers over it, and thanking him for his work. I didn’t get to see his reaction, which I would have savored, but I am sure he felt a lot better.
